In 2020, the UN General Assembly received a report on academic freedom from the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. Based on the report, a working group has consulted widely and drafted 9 ’Principles for Implementing the Right of Academic Freedom’. These principles are now released to guide the protection of academic freedom. Discussion of the principles and their application is important in also raising awareness of academic freedom for open societies and for democracy to flourish. In this seminar we will discuss these principles and how they can be used to protect and promote the right of academic freedom. We will also discuss what opportunities and challenges these principles pose for Swedish universities.

Prof Claudia Tazreiter
Claudia Tazreiter is a professor at Linköping University and conjoint professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. Her research focuses on the social and affective impacts of forced and irregular migration on human rights culture, the role of civil society in social change, and visual cultures of dissent. Claudia has been visiting research at the Institute for Political Science at University Vienna (2018), Center for Place, Culture and Politics at City University New Work CUNY (2014) and the Centre for International Studies (CERI) at Science Po (2011).
