Recent geopolitical changes have increased the interest for, but also challenged, academic freedom. It is generally considered that academic freedom in the Nordic countries is high. But is this really the case? In this seminar, Prof. Terence Karran will present his study on academic freedom in Scandinavia and discuss if the Nordic model has survived.
Terence Karran has his primary research focus on the international comparative analysis of academic freedom. He has for instance undertaken a national survey on academic freedom for the UK’s University and College Union which formed the basis for the UCU’s submission to the UNESCO/ ILO Committee of Experts on the Application of the Recommendations concerning Teaching Personne, alleging that the UK Government was in non-compliance in respect to the 1997 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel. He has also authored an Expert Report on Threats to Academic Freedom and Autonomy of Universities in Europe for the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the Council of Europe accepted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Currently he is undertaking a comparative analysis of academic freedom in 200 universities in the USA, looking at their levels of compliance with the American Association of University Professors’ 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure.
